Saltwater Cowboys: A Photographic Essay of Chincoteague Island Every year in late July, thousands of people from around the world descend upon tiny Chincoteague Island for the annual Pony Swim, Penning and Auction. Made famous by Marguerite Henry's book, Misty of Chincoteague, the event began in 1925. Volunteer firemen round up wild ponies from Assateague Island and herd them across the Chincoteague Channel - these men are affectionately referred to as Saltwater Cowboys. Photographer Medford Taylor has documented this unique fund-raising effort of our Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Department for nearly 30 years. Softbound book is a visual statement capturing the finest images of Chincoteague and the Pony Penning by a photographer who has been featured in many international publications, including National Geographic. 98 pages.
